Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away last week at the age of 96, will be buried at Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Chapel, one of the late Queen’s favorite residences and the location of many royal funerals before her. The Queen’s coffin will be transported to Windsor Castle, located about 20 miles outside of Central London, after her funeral on September 19 at Westminster Abbey. The Queen will be interred there, continuing a long tradition of interments there that includes 10 former monarchs.
The King George VI Memorial Chapel, which the Queen ordered following the death of her father, is one of the many nooks and crannies in St. George’s chapel. The Queen will rest in the memorial chapel with her siblings, Princess Margaret, and parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. At St. George’s Chapel, there are graves for twenty-four members of the royal family, including several who were interred in the Royal Vault.
The royal family has a long history with St. George’s Chapel, which has served as a venue for weddings, christenings, and funerals in addition to serving as a place of remembrance. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married there in 2018, and Prince Philip’s funeral was held there in 2021.
Under the rule of King Edward IV, the chapel’s initial construction started in 1475, and King Henry VIII oversaw its completion in 1528. The chapel now serves as a church for the neighborhood as well as the royal family’s designated place of worship.
A royal procession will carry the Queen’s casket to the chapel after her funeral. King Charles III and other senior members of the royal family will probably participate in the procession. Prince Philip, the late husband of the Queen, who was buried in the Royal Vault following his passing, is anticipated to be moved to the chapel of rest to be buried next to the monarch, but royal officials have not yet confirmed this.
Following royal tradition, the remains of the longest-reigning British monarch have undergone a series of processions at Edinburgh, Buckingham Palace, and Westminster since her passing at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Before arriving in Windsor, the Queen’s coffin will have traveled more than 500 miles.
A private burial service for the family will be held at the memorial chapel later that evening. In addition to Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, who passed away in 2002, King George VI’s remains were interred there in 1969.
Anyone wishing to pay their respects to the Queen will be able to do so after her burial is complete because St. George’s Chapel is accessible to the public on a number of weekdays.
