A World-Class Performing Arts Venue

Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi will feature multiple performance spaces designed to host international productions throughout the year. The venue will include:

  • A multipurpose performance hall with more than 2,000 seats
  • A 3,500-seat open-air amphitheatre
  • A 400-seat studio theatre
  • A 250-seat jazz venue

Together, these venues will provide a total capacity exceeding 6,000 guests across the development. The facility will host opera, ballet, theatre, orchestral performances, concerts, musicals, jazz performances, and other live productions while creating exceptional cultural experiences for local, regional, and international audiences.

Designed for International Productions

During the project presentation, His Highness reviewed the architectural vision, construction phases, and technical capabilities of Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi. The venue is being designed to the highest international standards, allowing it to host some of the world’s leading artistic productions and large-scale live performances.

The project is expected to become a permanent home for world-class opera, ballet, theatre, and other performing arts while supporting long-term artistic residencies, international touring partnerships, and co-productions with leading performing arts institutions around the world. It will also create new opportunities for Emirati and regional artists to perform on an international stage.

Architecture by Frank Gehry

Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi has been commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and designed by the late Frank Gehry, one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary architects and the designer of the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

The architectural concept draws inspiration from music and the performing arts. A transparent façade reflects Abu Dhabi’s openness to creativity and cultural exchange while adding another globally recognised architectural landmark to the emirate’s growing cultural portfolio.

Strengthening Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Ecosystem

His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan highlighted that investing in cultural infrastructure is a key part of Abu Dhabi’s comprehensive development vision. The arts play an important role in enhancing quality of life, encouraging openness and cultural dialogue, and building stronger connections between people and cultures.

Culture continues to support sustainable development while contributing to the growth of a knowledge-based economy. Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi reflects this long-term vision by creating a permanent platform for artistic excellence, creativity, and cultural exchange.

His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak stated that Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi represents a long-term investment in artistic expression and cultural development. The venue will bring together internationally renowned artists, performing companies, and creative talent from the UAE, the region, and around the world through artistic residencies, partnerships, and world-class productions.

Supporting Community, Education and Creative Talent

Beyond live performances, Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi will contribute to the wider community by offering artistic workshops, educational initiatives, and interactive programmes.

The project aims to encourage greater public participation in cultural activities while supporting the development of local artistic talent. By embedding the arts into everyday life, the venue will strengthen national identity and enrich Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape for future generations.

Driving the Creative Economy

Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi will also contribute to the continued growth of Abu Dhabi’s creative economy by supporting cultural and creative industries, increasing cultural tourism, and attracting investment, institutions, and international creative talent.

The project aligns with Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategy to diversify its economy while increasing the contribution of knowledge, innovation, and creativity to sustainable economic development.

Part of Saadiyat Island’s Cultural Destination

Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi becomes another major addition to the continued development of Saadiyat Island, joining internationally recognised cultural destinations including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, and the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Together, these developments continue to position Saadiyat Island as one of the world’s leading destinations for culture, arts, education, and knowledge.

What This Means for Abu Dhabi Real Estate
