The UAE continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the world’s most attractive destinations to live, work and build a future. In the latest Expat Insider survey, the country ranked among the top five destinations globally for expatriates, reinforcing its appeal to international professionals, entrepreneurs and families.
According to the 2026 survey conducted by InterNations, the UAE ranked fourth among 31 countries, performing particularly strongly in quality of life, everyday convenience and ease of settling in. The findings also point to an important change for the country’s real estate market: many expatriates are no longer looking at the UAE simply as a temporary place to work, but as somewhere they can establish a longer-term future.
The Expat Insider survey found that approximately 69% of expatriates are happy with life in the UAE, while almost one-third, 32%, said they were completely happy. The UAE also ranked third globally for quality of life, a category covering factors including travel, environment, healthcare and safety.
| Category | UAE Ranking / Result |
|---|---|
| Overall Expat Ranking | 4th Globally |
| Quality of Life | 3rd Globally |
| Expat Essentials | 1st Globally |
| Ease of Settling In | 5th Globally |
| Expats Happy with Life in UAE | 69% |
| Completely Happy | 32% |
The report described the UAE as the easiest destination in the world when it comes to “expat essentials”, while also highlighting its ability to attract ambitious professionals. These results reflect the country’s success in creating an environment where international residents can relatively quickly establish their careers and everyday lives.
The UAE has spent decades building an ecosystem that makes relocating, working and living in the country increasingly convenient. World-class infrastructure, international schools, healthcare, global connectivity and safety are combined with a highly diverse population and strong employment and business opportunities.
Abu Dhabi and Dubai, in particular, have evolved into genuinely international cities. Residents can build careers, raise families and enjoy the services and lifestyle expected from leading global capitals, while remaining connected to major markets across Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
What is becoming particularly interesting is how this relationship with the UAE changes over time. Many expatriates who initially arrive for a job opportunity eventually develop deeper connections with the country, which can influence decisions around residency, family life and property ownership.
Historically, many expatriates arriving in the Gulf viewed their stay as temporary. They would relocate for employment, rent a property and often assume that they would eventually return home or move to another international market.
That mindset has gradually evolved. Long-term residency options, economic opportunities, high living standards and continued investment in infrastructure are giving more residents reasons to consider the UAE as somewhere they can remain for many years.
For the property market, that change is significant. Once residents begin thinking about their future in five, ten or even twenty-year terms, the conversation naturally moves from simply finding somewhere to rent towards whether owning a home could provide greater stability and long-term value.
Within the wider UAE story, Abu Dhabi offers a particularly compelling proposition for long-term residents. The capital combines the economic opportunities of an international business centre with a lifestyle centred around waterfront communities, culture, education, open spaces and family-oriented neighbourhoods.
Communities such as Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, Al Reem Island, Al Raha Beach, Al Maryah Island, Fahid Island, Hudayriyat Island and Jubail Island offer very different lifestyles while remaining connected to Abu Dhabi’s major employment and leisure destinations. This gives residents the flexibility to choose between city living, beachfront communities, island lifestyles and quieter family neighbourhoods without leaving the capital.
Abu Dhabi’s employment base is also becoming increasingly diverse. The continued expansion of ADGM, artificial intelligence, financial services, tourism, technology and other high-value industries is attracting new professionals while creating additional reasons for existing residents to remain in the emirate.
Real estate demand ultimately begins with people wanting to live somewhere, and the UAE’s third-place global ranking for quality of life helps explain why more international residents are choosing to stay longer. In Abu Dhabi, access to good schools, healthcare, beaches, green spaces, entertainment and employment is increasingly built into master-planned communities, making them attractive not only to investors but to families and professionals looking for a long-term home.
This creates demand that goes far beyond rental yields. A professional may initially arrive and rent an apartment, later purchase a first home, and eventually move into a larger townhouse or villa as their family and lifestyle evolve. For Abu Dhabi’s property market, the ability to attract residents and retain them through different stages of life creates a deeper and more sustainable source of demand for the years ahead.
At Royal Lounge Properties, we are seeing the conversation with international residents become more sophisticated. The traditional benefits of the UAE are already widely understood, and buyers increasingly want to know whether a community will suit their lifestyle, family plans and long-term financial goals.
For many clients, the question is no longer simply, “Why should I invest in the UAE?” It is increasingly about whether they can see themselves living in Abu Dhabi for the next decade and which community offers the right balance between lifestyle and long-term value.
That shift is important for the capital’s real estate market. When a city combines economic opportunity with safety, healthcare, education, culture, connectivity and high-quality residential communities, demand becomes supported by more than short-term investor sentiment.
As Abu Dhabi continues developing new employment centres, cultural districts, entertainment destinations and waterfront communities, its ability to attract and retain international residents will remain one of the strongest foundations of its property market. For investors and homebuyers, understanding where these residents will choose to live n
