Abu Dhabi continues to strengthen its position as a global entertainment and tourism destination with the announcement of Sphere Abu Dhabi, a landmark project set to rise on Yas Island. Announced by Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment Co., the project carries a construction phase investment of US$1.7 billion and is expected to become one of the world’s most iconic entertainment venues.
Sphere Abu Dhabi will be the first Sphere venue outside the United States and will be strategically located between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi on Yas Island. Surrounded by lush green landscapes and positioned near Yas Island’s major attractions and entertainment hubs, the project is expected to significantly enhance Abu Dhabi’s tourism and global entertainment appeal. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.
According to the announcement, Sphere Abu Dhabi will feature a capacity of up to 20,000 visitors depending on event configurations, making it one of the region’s largest immersive entertainment venues. The project will host events powered by advanced experiential technologies and fully immersive multi-sensory experiences, similar to the original Sphere venue in Las Vegas, which opened in 2023.
His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, stated that Abu Dhabi continues to invest in long-term growth and world-class experiences that reinforce the emirate’s global positioning. He highlighted that Sphere Abu Dhabi reflects the strength of Abu Dhabi’s international partnerships and its commitment toward creating destinations that attract visitors, creators, investors, and global talent for decades to come.
James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, described the project as the first step toward building a global network of Sphere venues. He noted that Abu Dhabi’s infrastructure, ambition, and position as a cultural crossroads make it a natural destination for the expansion of the Sphere concept internationally.
Sphere Abu Dhabi will host three major categories of events powered by Sphere’s immersive technologies. These include Sphere Experiences featuring multi-sensory storytelling, concert residencies, and large-scale brand and marquee events. The venue will also support flexible configurations for conferences, combat sports, product launches, entertainment shows, and global events.
The entertainment and cultural experiences planned for Sphere Abu Dhabi will celebrate Emirati culture through large-scale art, visual storytelling, and immersive productions. Plans also include displaying Emirati artists’ work on the Exosphere, the venue’s massive spherical LED exterior. Concerts and events are expected to feature regional Arabic talent alongside international performers and entertainment brands.
Located just minutes away from Zayed International Airport, Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to become a major gateway attraction for the emirate. Its presence on Yas Island will further strengthen the destination alongside world-renowned attractions, hospitality developments, theme parks, and annual events such as the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Once operational, Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to create thousands of local jobs across tourism, hospitality, entertainment, infrastructure, and operations sectors. The project also marks another milestone in Abu Dhabi’s integrated destination development strategy alongside major developments including the Saadiyat Cultural District and the upcoming Disney theme park resort on Yas Island.
The launch of Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to have a strong long-term impact on Abu Dhabi’s tourism, hospitality, and real estate sectors. Major entertainment landmarks typically increase international visitor demand, hotel occupancy rates, tourism spending, and investor confidence in surrounding districts. Yas Island is already one of the UAE’s most visited entertainment destinations, and the addition of Sphere Abu Dhabi further elevates its international profile.
For the real estate market, the project is likely to increase demand for residential developments, branded residences, waterfront apartments, hospitality assets, and short-term rental investments across Yas Island and nearby investment zones. Large-scale entertainment and tourism projects often drive stronger infrastructure growth, improved connectivity, and long-term capital appreciation in surrounding communities.
Sphere Abu Dhabi also reinforces Abu Dhabi’s broader economic vision and government-backed strategy focused on tourism diversification, entertainment, culture, infrastructure, and foreign investment attraction. As the emirate continues to introduce globally recognized destinations and experiences, investor confidence in Abu Dhabi’s long-term growth trajectory is expected to strengthen further.
